Recycle Your Old Bike

Updated

There is little support locally from local government when it comes to recycling that much loved bike of yours.  Sometimes a local initiative is run by the local council but you have to be in the know, blink and you’ll miss it!

So that raises the question, what can you do to recycle your bike.  Having made a few enquiries here are the solutions we have come up with :-

  1. Sell your bike on eBay or similar marketplace website. You’ll get some money and the purchaser a useful bike or project to get stuck into!
  2. Sell your bike at the local auction house, W&H Peacock, Eastcotts Park, Wallis Way, Bedford MK42 0PE  Tel 01234 266366 email info@peacockauction.co.uk  You’ll hopefully receive some money after all costs and you know that the person buying it will put it to good use.
  3. Donate your bike to a charity. There are a couple that are very keen to take your bike, restore it and pass it on. These include ;-

Sue Ryder – there are a couple of shops locally that accept bikes.

All donated bikes go through their workshop, where they are checked, repaired (if required), serviced, and then signed off by a CYTECH-qualified instructor. Any bikes that are not suitable for repair will be broken into parts, which can then be used on other repairable bikes. Local Branches participating in the scheme include:-

a) The Bedford Branch – 35-37 Ampthill Road, Bedford, MK42 9JP  Tel 01234 364825 email Bedford2205@sueryder.org

Open 9.30am – 5.00pm Monday to Saturday and 10.00am – 4pm on Sundays.

b) The St John’s Hospice shop in Moggerhanger – St John’s Hospice,  St John’s Road, Moggerhanger, MK44 3RJ  Tel 01767 642433 email stjohns2209@sueryder.org

Open 9.00am – 4pm Monday to Saturday

Emmaus is the second charity.

Our nearest one is located on the outskirts of Carlton, this extensive operation is well known locally and they recycle considerable amounts, bikes included, with all proceeds helping the rough sleepers and those homeless looking to get back on their feet.  Recycling your old bike with them is “a great way to raise money, provide good value to customers and ultimately keep old bikes out of landfill”.

Emmaus Village Carlton – School Lane, Carlton MK43 7LQ  Tel  01234 720826 email office@emmausvc.org

I would check opening times before travelling. Sometimes they get overwhelmed and close for a few days to catch up. Normal drop off times are  Wednesday to Saturday 10am – 2.30pm and Sunday 10am – 2.30pm

Phones are monitored Tuesday to Saturday 9.30am – 4.30pm and Sunday 10am – 4pm.

Please note – some of the details above may change with the passage of time. If you discover anything out of date, or learn of another local solution, drop us a line.
