LIFE AFTER A STROKE

The stroke rehabilitation scheme, run by Fusion, operates from John Bunyan Sports and Fitness, Kempston Swimming Pool and Robinson Pools and Fitness.

The scheme, which was launched in 2016, aims to help improve the daily lives of stroke survivors by providing a programme of activity after stroke.

Lisa Simpson, Sport & Community Development Manager for Fusion said: “Fully qualified ARNI (Action for Rehabilitation from Neurological injury) trained staff are here to listen, help and deliver the appropriate support and training to allow stroke survivors to continue their ongoing rehabilitation. By working together, the aim is to improve the outcomes and quality of life for people who have had a stroke and help them regain and maintain their independence. The positive impact the scheme has on people’s lives and wellbeing is fantastic, we hope to continue the great work and make a difference to stroke survivors in Bedford.”

Cllr Louise Jackson, Portfolio Holder for Public Health at Bedford Borough Council said: “I recently attended an activity session at the Stroke Rehab and was extremely impressed by the commitment and professionalism of those involved. It’s clear to see the positive impact this venture is having on the stroke survivors that refer onto the scheme.”

Cllr Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at Bedford Borough Council who joined her said: “The difference this scheme can have upon peoples’ lives is amazing. It was great to meet individuals who have overcome obstacles with the use of this type of physical activity which focuses on recovery and is delivered in such an optimistic way.”

Some personal feedback from some of the stroke survivors:

‘I have gone from not even being able to get up off the floor unaided to partaking in the exercises. The fitness level is making me feel more independent, confident and happy. This scheme has empowered me to see that my stroke doesn’t have to mean the end of things I use to do and shown me that with support and small adjustments I am able to achieve physical independence and improved fitness levels.’

‘Much stronger and walking is better, better balance. Being fitter has given me confidence to be more independent e.g. using local transport and even swimming alone. Excellent support from rehab team. Feel confident knowing the support is there if needed’.

‘It has benefited me immensely. My walking has improved no end. My all-round mobility is far far better.’
